We can’t name an exact clock time, but Scripture lets us estimate: at least about one hour, and likely around one to three hours through the night before His arrest.
Scriptural Explanation
- The Bible says, “Could you not watch with Me one hour?” (Matthew 26:40; Mark 14:37). That marks roughly an hour for the first stretch.
- He then went away and prayed again, and a third time in the same manner (Matthew 26:42, 44; Mark 14:39–41).
- Luke adds that an angel strengthened Him and He prayed in such agony that His sweat was like great drops of blood (Luke 22:43–44), showing extended, intense prayer.
- Immediately after the third time, He said, “the hour is at hand,” and Judas arrived (Matthew 26:45–47).

- If the first interval was about an hour, and He repeated the prayer two more times, the total likely ran past one hour and could well be around two to three hours. The Bible does not bind each session to the same length, so we speak carefully: not less than about an hour; probably a few hours.

Now notice, the Spirit draws our eyes not to the clock but to the cost: He watched, prayed, and surrendered until the cup was received—long enough to conquer the battle before the cross.
