Is There Healing in the Atonement?
1) Direct Answer
Yes. Healing is in the atonement. Jesus paid for both sin and sickness when He shed His blood and was striped for us. By His stripes we are healed.
2) Scriptural Explanation
- Isaiah 53:4-5: “Surely He hath borne our griefs and carried our sorrows… with His stripes we are healed.” Matthew 8:16-17 applies this to physical sickness: “Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.”
- 1 Peter 2:24: “By whose stripes ye were healed.” The same cross that removes sin breaks the claim of sickness.
- Psalm 103:3: “Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases.” God ties forgiveness and healing together.
- Mark 2:9-11: Jesus showed that the authority to forgive sins and to heal the body stood together—“Which is easier…?”
- James 5:14-15: The church is commanded to pray for the sick, anoint with oil, and the prayer of faith shall save the sick. God would not ordain a promise without providing it in the sacrifice.
- Exodus typology: At the Passover (a type of Christ our Passover, 1 Corinthians 5:7), Israel came out and “there was not one feeble person among their tribes” (Psalm 105:37). The blood on the door spared, and the Lamb they partook of strengthened—pointing to salvation and healing in the Lamb.
- Numbers 21:8-9 with John 3:14: The brazen serpent lifted up for the bitten (sick, dying) foreshadows Christ lifted up. Looking and living shows healing flowing from atonement type.
- Exodus 15:26: “I am the LORD that healeth thee.” The Redeemer reveals Himself as Healer.
- 1 Corinthians 11:29-30: Not discerning the Lord’s body led to weakness and sickness—showing His broken body is our provision.
3) Simple Clarifying Logic
- The Bible says He “bore” our sicknesses and “by His stripes we are healed.” If He bore it, we don’t have to carry it. Salvation and healing are twin benefits from the same sacrifice.
- Not all are saved though salvation is provided; it must be received by faith. So with healing—it is provided, and we receive by faith in His Word and promise.
- We still live in mortal bodies and await full redemption of the body at the resurrection (Romans 8:23). We are not promised to never die in this age, but we are given healings as a foretaste and token of that coming redemption.
- Sometimes there is delay or a trial, but unbelief limits the manifestation (Mark 6:5-6). Yet the promise stands, and the church is to obey James 5 and believe God’s Word.
4) Reinforcing Statement
Now notice, the same Lord who forgives your sins is the One who heals your diseases. Come on the basis of the blood, confess His Word, be prayed for, and believe. It’s not three remedies or three works—one Lamb, one cross, one covenant—salvation and healing provided together.
