What Does the Bible Say About Watching Secular Movies?
1) Direct Answer
The Bible doesn’t name “movies,” but it clearly commands believers to guard their eyes, love not the world, and have no fellowship with the works of darkness. So a Christian should turn away from secular movies that glorify sin, dull the conscience, or grieve the Spirit. The cleanest, safest walk is abstinence from worldly entertainment and a life filled with what edifies.
2) Scriptural Explanation
- “I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes” (Psalm 101:3).
- “I made a covenant with mine eyes” (Job 31:1).
- “The light of the body is the eye… if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness” (Matthew 6:22-23).
- “Love not the world… the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes… is not of the Father” (1 John 2:15-17).
- “Be not conformed to this world” (Romans 12:2).
- “Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them” (Ephesians 5:11).
- “Whatsoever things are true… pure… of good report; think on these things” (Philippians 4:8).
- “Abstain from all appearance of evil” (1 Thessalonians 5:22).
- “Evil communications corrupt good manners” (1 Corinthians 15:33).
- “Set your affection on things above” (Colossians 3:2).
- “Make not provision for the flesh” (Romans 13:14).
- “Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity” (Psalm 119:37).
3) Simple Clarifying Logic
- What you look at feeds your soul. If the eye-gate is filled with lust, violence, blasphemy, witchcraft, and mockery of holiness, it plants seeds that war against the Spirit.
- If a film glorifies what Jesus died to deliver us from, how can the Holy Ghost be at ease while you enjoy it?
- “It’s just entertainment” cannot stand against “Have no fellowship… but rather reprove.”
- A simple test:
- Does it blaspheme God’s Name?
- Does it celebrate sin or stir lust, fear, or rebellion?
- Can you watch it with a prayerful heart and give thanks to God for it?
- Would you be at peace watching it if Jesus were bodily sitting beside you?
- Would it stumble a weaker believer or stain your testimony?
If the answer exposes darkness, leave it.
4) Short Reinforcing Statement
Now notice, the Bride keeps her garments clean. Make a covenant with your eyes, redeem the time, and let your home be a sanctuary, not a channel for the world’s spirit. If in doubt, leave it out—and fill that place with the Word, prayer, and things that are true, pure, and of good report.
