What If I Marry the Wrong Person?
1) Direct Answer
If you are not yet married and you know it is wrong, stop and wait on God. If you are already married, keep your covenant. Regret is not a Bible reason to break a marriage. God can redeem a hard union when you walk in His order. Only clear scriptural grounds release a believer.

- Before marriage: “Be not unequally yoked together with unbelievers” (2 Corinthians 6:14). “In the Lord” is the rule (1 Corinthians 7:39).
- After marriage: “What God hath joined together, let not man put asunder” (Matthew 19:6). God hates putting away (Malachi 2:14–16).
- The Lord’s command: “Let not the wife depart… but and if she depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled… and let not the husband put away his wife” (1 Corinthians 7:10–11).

- Unequally yoked after the fact: If the unbelieving spouse is pleased to dwell, do not leave; if the unbeliever departs, “a brother or sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace” (1 Corinthians 7:12–15).
- The binding nature of marriage: while the spouse lives, the covenant stands (Romans 7:2–3).
- The way forward inside the covenant: wives win husbands by a chaste life (1 Peter 3:1–2); husbands love as Christ loved the church (Ephesians 5:25).

- The Bible never says, “If you married the wrong person, you may leave.” It says, “Let not man put asunder.” So “wrong” feelings don’t undo a vow God witnessed.
- If an unbelieving spouse refuses to live in peace and departs, the believer is “not under bondage.” This however is not a license to remarry. But if they will dwell in peace, stay and be a light.
- If safety is at stake, separation can be used for protection (1 Corinthians 7:11) while seeking God’s order. Holiness never requires you to remain in harm’s way, but it also does not make regret a license for divorce.
- God can turn “wrong” into “holy” when you submit the home to His Word—repent, forgive, pray, and live the covenant. He honors His order.

Now notice, the way out of a troubled marriage is rarely out—it’s up. Bring the home under the Word, seek peace, and let the Lord make bitter waters sweet. Where Scripture gives no release, faithfulness is the path—and God meets those who honor their vows.
