Why Did the Israelites Spend 430 Years When the Prophecy to Abraham Was That They Would Spend 400 Years? Did the Prophecy Fail?

No, the prophecy did not fail. The 400 years speaks of the period of affliction of Abraham’s seed; the 430 years is the full span of their sojourning from the giving of the promise until the deliverance. God brought them out exactly on time.

- The Bible says, “Thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years” (Genesis 15:13–14). Notice the word “afflict.”
- Exodus says, “Now the sojourning of the children of Israel…was four hundred and thirty years. And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day…all the hosts of the LORD went out” (Exodus 12:40–41). So the total sojourning is 430, and God timed the exodus to the very day.
- Paul explains the count begins with the promise to Abraham: “the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul the covenant” (Galatians 3:17).
- The “affliction” begins when the promised seed appears and persecution starts. Also remember, Abraham and his seed were “strangers” in Canaan too (Genesis 17:8), a land “not theirs” at that time.
